CLA SE Seminar - Biodiversity Net Gain

This event will look at Biodiversity Net Gain, following on from our successful webinar on this topic last year.

The Government's Environment Bill will make Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) mandatory for future developments under the Town and Country Planning Act. Developers will need to demonstrate a 10% gain in biodiversity (measured using the Defra metric) secured for a minimum of 30 years in order to receive planning consent. This gain can be delivered on the development site, off-site or via the purchase of statutory biodiversity credits.

This event will hear from experts who are already working on net gain projects to discuss the opportunities (and any pitfalls) for landowners. These include

Harry Greenfield, Senior Land Use Policy Advisor, CLA, who will give an overview of BNG, including the policy context, the timetable for implementation and what the CLA has been doing to support members and lobby government to ensure this works in practice

Anthony Weston and Kevin Jay, Farm and Environment Consultants and Directors at CLM, will discuss their experience working with BNG projects to walk through how this works in practice and what opportunities there are for farms and estates based on an understanding of their natural capital assets.

Iain Morris and Will Brandreth from Chavereys will look at some of the implications of landowners entering into BNG contracts, including what this will mean for tax. They will also explore how their experience in carbon accounting provides some lessons to learn in BNG.

We will also have CLA Member, Henry Gurney from the Claydon Estate, in conversation with Harry Greenfield discussing his experience with BNG with Network Rail.

Each of our speakers will present for around 20 minutes followed by two Q&A sessions. We will end with a panel discussion where you can listen and join in to put across your views and ask questions.

The event will be run as a Zoom meeting. You will be sent the joining instructions 24 hours before the event begins.
