Nestled in the heart of the pretty village of Keevil is an extraordinary family house. This is not a tour of a stately home but one where you can explore the history and architecture of one of the oldest properties in Wiltshire up close. The house is timber framed with wattle and daub panels on a dressed limestone plinth, parts of which date from 1420.
Owner Sophie Mowbray will take CLA members on a tour, which includes all the rooms in this quirky house with interesting interiors including original 15th century murals, woodcarvings and a vaulted hall. There are many examples of old stained glass, leaded windows.
The house is full of antiques and paintings together with items collected on the owners’ travels.
St Leonard’s Church, also interesting from an historical and architectural point of view, is included in the visit.
Sophie, who is an excellent cook, will provide members with a cream tea to finish their visit.
