Wheal Martyn offers something truly unique. Home to Europe’s only China Clay Mining Heritage centre, and set within a preserved Victorian Clay works amongst 26 acres of woodland walks, Wheal Martyn tells the story of Cornwall’s billion-pound china clay industry, which is still alive today.
Many of the tour guides worked first hand in the china clay industry, enabling them to offer fascinating insights, which really bring the story to life. Following in the footsteps of the clay workers, you will learn about the lives of those who lived and worked in Cornwall’s dramatic Clay Country. You will see Cornwall’s largest working waterwheel, explore ancient buildings such as the crib hut, and see industry tools and vintage commercial vehicles.
At the peak of the site is the spectacular view of a working clay pit with monstrous machines at work. If we are lucky, you may see blasting in the pit. Following the tour you can enjoy an interactive centre, woodland trails and a café where we can pre-book lunches.
The tour takes 1.5 hours but you are able to stay at the site all day to enjoy the additional points of interest.
