Speaker: Steve Hodson, Governor, HMP & YOI Portland

Steve has been Governor of HMP & YOI Portland since 2017.

He recently completed 26 years with the Prison Service and has a total of 31 years publicservice, including time as a Police Officer (1983 – 1989 in a variety of roles) with the West Mercia Constabulary.

He began his prison career as an officer at HMP Blakenhurst which was operated privately by UK Detention Services (UKDS) before it was transferred back to the Public Sector. He has held a number of senior roles, including Residential Governor at HMP Blakenhurst and Head of Residence at HMP Bristol. In 2005 he was appointed Deputy Governor at HMP Dorchester and subsequently Deputy Governor at HMP Guys Marsh, a second period at HMP Dorchester and HMP & YOI Portland. In 2014 he was appointed Governor at HMP Erlestoke and also spent time seconded to HMPPS HR to carry out a review of the National Assessment process and became the lead for the Offender Management Model.

Steve’s talk will cover whether Prisons should be about punishment or rehabilitation and ways to include rehabilitated prisoners to help the labour shortage in the agricultural industry.

Speaker: Jim Highnam, Managing Director, BV Dairy

BV Dairy was established in 1958 and has come a long way since their award winning Clotted Cream was sold in the local area. Now run by the third generation of the Highnam family both the business and the range of specialty products has grown and developed to form one of the most respected and successful independent dairies in the South West of England today. The long term sustainability of the dairy supply chain in and around North Dorset is very important to BV Dairy and the company operate 2 renewable energy projects in conjunction with the dairy processing operation.
 
Jim joined his father, Chris, at the dairy in 1991. Jim’s passion for the business and the farming community shines through all that the dairy does. Jim’s background is in the production and technical aspects of the business, having studied Food Science at the University of Reading (many years ago!), but his current role is now broader.
