CLA South West A Day at Escot Park (2)

CLA members Mish and Lucy Kennaway took over the Escot Estate from Mish’s father in 1984 facing a series of setbacks over the years that could have caused an ordinary couple to throw in the towel.  Escot Park was split in two by the construction of the A30 towards the end of the 90’s however, Mish and Lucy were not deterred and re-evaluated the business turning the new road to their advantage by bolstering the estate’s credentials as a visitor attraction.
This pattern of setbacks and success has been a theme through to the present day. From a fish farming enterprise to building up the wildlife park’s collection of native species, the journey has not been an easy one. A hurricane, threat of fish disease and potential competition from the Wildwood Trust are just a few of the issues they have encountered along the way.

In 2016, Wildwood Trust became a tenant of the estate and now runs the park as Wildwood Escot; the park now boasts lynx, British Wildcats, otters, wild boar, birds of prey and wolves.

Latterly Mish has concentrated on his work with the charity Red Squirrel Project South West and Escot has the second no-wire walk through red squirrel enclosure in the country. Elsewhere Mish and Lucy have continued to diversify in other ways; the main house is a popular conference and wedding venue, with the parkland used for school visits and the Beautiful Days music festival.

CLA members will start the day with coffee at the house; Mish will then take everyone on a guided walk before lunch and a slide talk and optional wider circular walk in the afternoon. The day will include the red squirrel project. Places are limited and early booking is advised.
